Why it remains the reference
The whole casing sits behind the ear, which leaves room for more generous electronics, a stronger speaker and a bigger battery. The result: power in reserve and comfortable battery life.
It is also easier to handle. Less nimble fingers, fading eyesight, a device put in and taken out every day: here size becomes an advantage, not a flaw.
Who it suits
It is the reference for severe losses and for children, whose ears grow and whose earmould has to be renewed regularly — a behind-the-ear device adapts, an in-the-ear one would have to be remade.

What about discretion?
Today's behind-the-ear devices bear little resemblance to those of twenty years ago: slim casings, colours matched to hair or skin, very fine tubing. If discretion is still the priority, look at the invisible models.
